The Foundation Course, in 72 class hours scheduled over a few weeks, you'll learn to speak and understand Spanish at the Basic level.

You learn in an enjoyable small group (6 to 12 students) class that is highly interactive, through the use of music, games, theatre, songs and much more. There is no homework - the important learning happens in the class.

The goal of the course is to develop your ability to converse in Spanish about common, everyday subjects within a framework of roughly a 1500-to-2000-word vocabulary using 6 (past, present and future) verb tenses. At this level you should feel a sense of confidence that you can speak and understand ‘simple’ Spanish (at least in ‘protected’ situations) and you are eager to continue using Spanish and to learn more.

This is the earliest level where you can easily begin learning on your own, under the right circumstances.

How Do I Know if this Course Is Right for Me?

Admission to the Foundation Course is limited; each class has from 6 to 12 students. And because the course is highly interactive, it's important that students starting the same course are all at roughly the same level. But, in all cases, you must have a personal interview with one of our instructors before you can have your name placed on the waiting list.

In your case, we would advise you to subscribe to the Spanish Fluency Membership Program. But it's best that you have an interview with one of our instructors to be sure.

Your Instructor, Lupe Escamilla

Lupe is an experienced language instructor (English, Spanish) who has taught conventional language classes at the university level and developed and taught innovative language programs for children and adults in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Austria, Malaysia and elsewhere.

Lupe has been trained and accredited by Dr. Georgi Lozanov, and worked closely with him for many years.

Format and Scheduling of Class Sessions

The 72-hour course is delivered in 24 3-hour sessions (1.5 hours, then a 30-minute break, then another1.5 hours).

Class schedules vary, but here are the most common:

2 Sessions per week for 10 weeks (e.g. Tuesday and Thursday), with 2 Saturdays of 2-sessions each.
3 sessions per week for 8 weeks (e.g. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday)
3 week intensive course meeting Monday through Saturday with 2 'double sessions each week.

With Designed Immersion™ classes you learn in the class (there is no homework), so attendance is very important.

Due to Covid we have suspended all courses since 2019. We plan to start offering the Foundation Course again starting in the 4th quarter of 2023. However, we are still investigating what schedules we will offer as well as our policy regarding Covid and class absences.

Enrollment, Interview and Payment

Here are the steps to enroll for a Foundation Course offering:

Contact us letting us know you are interested.
We will contact you to set up a phone / video conference where we'll evaluate your current level of knowledge of Spanish as well as other important factors that can affect your enrollment.
If you're accepted as a candidate for the Foundation Course, we'll put your name on the Enrollment List along with your schedule preferences.
Once a schedule that fits your preferences becomes available, we'll place you on the class list at your say-so. At this point we'll ask you to place a deposit of $300 to hold your place on the Enrollment list. This deposit is fully refundable up to one week before the class is scheduled to start.
The balance due for the course ($2450) is due no later than 5-days prior to the start of the course.
