All human brains (child or adult) automatically acquire language
Many students come to us thinking that as adults they can no longer learn language in the automatic way that they learned English as children. They think that the only way to learn is through formal classes and study practices. But the truth is that the adult brain continues to acquire language in the same automatic way it always has. Formal classes and study simply provide the focus on the Spanish so that the brain can do its magic. The advantage of immersion is that it provides Spanish to the brain in the ideal way for rapid acquisition of language.
Using immersion is the smart way to learn Spanish
To become fluent in Spanish you'll need to know the meanings of probably 10,000 words or more. Imagine memorizing the meanings of 20 words a day for 1 year, 4 months and two weeks (that's 500 days * 20 words a day equals 10,000 words). This would be a monumental task (and monumentally boring,) for most of us. But with immersion, the automatic processes of the brain can take over this task and accomplish it without our effort. The process will still take calendar time, but it's really the only practical approach to acquiring the large vocabulary needed for fluency.
