- Functional fluency
- What you can't do
You are Functionally Fluent when you are able to easily understand any Spanish-language TV show, film, series, documentary etc. without the help of sub-titles.
In a 40-minute show you might not know the meaning of a few (less than 5) words, but you won't skip a beat because you'll understand them well enough from the context.
And you will be able to communicate (speak) anything you want to native Spanish speakers and have them understand you, though you make minor grammatical and usage 'errors'.
When you are Functionally Fluent you can do anything that native Spanish speakers can do, with these limitations:
- Unless you've had considerable practice conversing with native Spanish speakers, you may find yourself thinking too much when you want to speak - which will slow you down and can throw you out of the flow of conversation.
The remedy for this is simple: practice conversing with native Spanish speakers any way you can.
- You will probably lack knowledge of the history and current culture of any Spanish-speaking country where you happen to be. This can impact how you converse in some situations.
